Elegy for Your Absence
H.R. Hays

In that moment you sailed for all of death
Into profound oceans of silence
With long hours of sleeping pupils,
And a flock of doves caught in your dreams.

Now you are already in distant moonlight,
More yourself than in the arrows of your golden clock
Where you reckoned such a shoreless moment
For the thirst of wings that was burning on your shoulders.

You shall have vaulted seas stared at by inquietude,
Abysses in the timid solitude of your absence;
And in the night you shall have been delicate warm breeze
Close to that crumb of our amorous earth.

Long embrace of breath over the poppies
And a laugh and a song without words or music;
With a “Here I am,” glad of past wakefulness,
And a “forever” warm in the cool plain.

As you leave pressed in the arms of silence
The light of our words shall echo more clearly
And in each stanza of air an accent shall be entangled
And in each butterfly more wings shall be born to you.

Gladness of being alive for that eternal day,
Knowing yourself in the water, in the sun, and in the grass.
Among the clouds you shall make nativities of silver
And you shall discover your nest in a tree of stars.

Adrift
Tessa Wilkinson

My anchor has lost its hold
I am adrift
My boat is going where it will
The sails are tattered and torn
The sea seems enormous and uncharted
It throws me hither and thither
Into the deepest, darkest trough of despair
Then up into the sunlight and for a while there is hope
Then back again into the darkness
Will my little craft be overwhelmed?
As the huge waves of grief engulf it, will it come up again?
And again and again?
They say 'time heals…'
Can my little boat be trimmed out with new sails?
Can it sail again into a calm harbour and put down its anchor?
Can the navigation system be mended, so I know where I am going?
In time, in time…
but not yet.
This storm has to be passed through, and then a time will come to re-enter the harbour and return to still waters.

Remembering

Go ahead and mention my loved one,
The one that died, you know.
Don't worry about hurting me further.
The depth of my pain doesn't show.

Don't worry about making me cry
I'm already crying inside.
Help me to heal by releasing
The tears that I try to hide.

I'm hurt when you just keep silent,
Pretending they didn't exist,
I'd rather you mention my loved one
Knowing that they have been missed.

You asked me how I was doing
I say "pretty good" or "fine"
But healing is something ongoing
I feel it will take a lifetime.

xxx A positive start to the New Year xxx

Beginning Today

Beginning today I will no longer worry about yesterday.
It is in the past and the past will never change.
Only I can change by choosing to do so.
Beginning today I will no longer worry about tomorrow.

Tomorrow will always be there,
Waiting for me to make the most of it.
But I cannot make the most of tomorrow
Without first making the most of today.

Beginning today I will look in the mirror and
I will see a person worthy of my respect and admiration.
This capable person looking back at me is
Someone I enjoy spending time with and
Someone I would like to get to know better.

Beginning today I will cherish each moment of my life.
I value this gift bestowed upon me in this world and
I will unselfishly share this gift with others.
I will use this gift to enhance the lives of others.

Beginning today I will take a moment to step off the beaten path
And to revel in the mysteries I encounter.
I will face challenges with courage and determination.
I will overcome what barriers there may be,
Which hinder my quest for growth and self-improvement.

Beginning today I will take life one day at a time, one step at a time.
Discouragement will not be allowed to taint my positive self-image,
My desire to succeed or my capacity to love.

Beginning today I walk with renewed faith in human kindness.
Regardless of what has gone before,
I believe there is hope for a brighter and better future.

Beginning today I will open my mind and my heart.
I will welcome new experiences, I will meet new people.
I will not expect perfection from myself nor anyone else;
Perfection does not exist in an imperfect world.
But, I will applaud the attempt to overcome human foibles.

Beginning today I am responsible for my own happiness
And I will do things that make me happy . . .
Admire the beautiful wonders of nature, listen to my favorite music,
Pet a kitten or a puppy, soak in a bubble bath.
Pleasure can be found in the most simple of gestures.

Beginning today I will learn something new;
I will try something different;
I will savour all the various flavors life has to offer.
I will change what I can and the rest I will let go.
I will strive to become the best me I can possibly be.

Beginning today . . .
And every day for the rest of my life . . .

For Just A Moment
Copyright 1995 by Brenda Penepent

For just a moment
I’m sure I saw
a flicker of light ahead.
Perhaps it was your smile.
Though past now, remembered,
in my heart
like the small sound of
a butterfly passing by.
No night
is so dark
that can not be brightened
with memories of you.
Raindrops carry along
your blessings from heaven
to wash away my tears
and bring me hope anew.

••• The Spirit of Christmas •••

The spirit of Christmas is often found
In things that we can see
A street of gold and silver
A sparkling Christmas tree.

It’s found in quiet serenity
Of freshly fallen snow
In lights upon the river
A candles’ gentle glow.

It’s found in pretty presents
And treasures of delight
In stories told of Christmas’ past
On cold and wintry nights.

It’s found in Yuletide carolers
Who stand out in the street
And spread good cheer and tidings
To everyone they meet.

It’s found in bustling cities
As choirs get up to sing
In sleepy little villages
Where lonely church bells ring.

It’s found within a beggar’s heart
Who kindly takes the time
To help a cold and hungry child
By sharing his last dime.

It’s found within the prisons walls
And temples made of stone
It’s found within the orphanages
And in the nursing homes.

It’s found within the wise men
Who brought gifts from far away
And the eastern star that led them
To the stable where He lay.

It’s found within the Spirit
This gift from up above
It’s filled with pure salvation
And wrapped in His sweet love.

It’s even found in old St. Nick
As he kneels down to pray
To Jesus, Blessed Redeemer
Who was born on Christmas day.

One Little Candle
By Carol Dunn

It’s just one little candle
One tiny flickering light
A challenge to the darkness
A small beacon in the night.
It could be just a gentle touch
A reminder that you’re there
Or a warm, compassionate hug
That shows you understand and care.
Sometimes it only takes your smile
To encourage and uplift
And should that smile lead to laughter
You’ve shared a special gift.
There’s comfort in shared silence
Or in a softly spoken word
Or in taking time to listen
To feelings that must be heard.
Yes, it’s just one little candle
Softly glowing in the night
But it can overcome the darkness
If it will only share it’s light.
Just one candle at a time
Each one giving from its heart
Reaching out to those nearby
Asking them to do their part.
To make sure the light keeps growing
Reaching out to those in sorrow
Offering comfort, warmth and hope
Strength and courage for tomorrow.

♥ Do not judge a song by its duration
♥ Nor by the number of its notes
♥ Judge it by the way it touches and lifts the soul
♥ Sometimes those unfinished are among the most beautiful…
♥ And when something has enriched your life
♥ And when it’s melody lingers on in your heart.
♥ Is it unfinished?
♥ Or is it endless?

A Poem of Hope

One song can spark a moment,
One flower can wake the dream.
One tree can start a forest,
One bird can herald spring.
One smile begins a friendship,
One handclasp lifts a soul.
One star can guide a ship at sea,
One word can frame the goal.
One vote can change a nation,
One sunbeam lights a room,
One candle wipes out darkness,
One laugh will conquer gloom.
One step must start each journey,
One word must start each prayer.
One hope will raise our spirits,
One touch can show you care.
One voice can speak with wisdom,
One heart can know what’s true.
One life can make the difference.
You see, it’s up to YOU!

♥ ♥ ♥ I Hope ♥ ♥ ♥
♥ By Sarah Magana ♥

I hope you surf the waves from the ocean,
Big and small.
I hope you watch the sunset,
From a mountain straight and tall.
I hope you can sing a song to all
the angels,
Loud and clear.
I hope you will try new things,
Never giving into fears.
I hope you find a rainbow,
And realize it was worth the rain.
I hope through your journey,
You will learn to balance smiles with pain.
I hope you watch the stars shoot by,
Upon a grassy hill.
I hope you know that I love you,
Always have and always will.
